Japanese copula marker works as a filler in spontaneous speech

چکیده
The Japanese syntactic form desune generally works as a copula marker, but sometimes it also works as a filler in spoken language. We examine the distribution and characteristics of two aspects of desune through spontaneous speech corpora, called ASU and CSJ. We also compare desune with other fillers and indicate the similarities between them.

Detection of Fillers Using Prosodic Features in Spontaneous Speech Recognition of Japanese
A new scheme of detecting fillers in spontaneous speech recognition process was developed. When a filler hypothesis appears during the 2 pass decoding of a speech recognizer with two-pass configuration, a prosodic module checks the morpheme which is hypothesized as a filler and outputs the likelihood score of the morpheme being a filler. When the likelihood score exceeds a threshold, a prosodic...
متن کاملThe production of lexical categories (VP) and functional categories (copula) at the initial stage of child L2 acquisition
This is a longitudinal case study of two Farsi-speaking children learning English: ‘Bernard’ and ‘Melissa’, who were 7;4 and 8;4 at the start of data collection. The research deals with the initial state and further development in the child second language (L2) acquisition of syntax regarding the presence or absence of copula as a functional category, as well as the role and degree of L1 influe...
متن کاملClause types and filed pauses in Japanese spontaneous monologues
Hesitations are prevalent in spontaneous speech and believed to be relevant to on-line speech planning. We tested the complexity hypothesis that speakers are more likely to need to suspend speaking, the more complex the constituent, by examining ratios of filled pauses (fillers) at clause and case boundaries with following constituents of different degrees of complexity, using ì the Corpus of s...
متن کاملFactors affecting speakers² choice of fillers in Japanese presentations
Disfluencies are intrinsic in spontaneous speech. Although it is known that there is a wide range of frequencies and types of disfluencies among speech, little is known about factors affecting speakers choice of disfluency types. We first conducted a correspondence analysis using ratios of seven types of fillers, and other disfluencies, in 174 presentations and quantified the data. We conducted...
متن کاملOn the characteristics of three types of Japanese fillers: e-, ma-, and demonstrative-type fillers
Japanese has various forms of fillers. However, the characteristics of each form have yet to be well understood. We use a large corpus of spontaneous Japanese speech and conversation and focus on three frequently observed types of fillers : e-, ma-, and demonstrative-type fillers. We show that it is possible to characterize Japanese fillers from the viewpoint of how a speaker concerns himself w...
